Our story begins with a side-by-side shotgun — gifted to my great-great-grandfather by the Marquis of Bute for his years keeping the Ayrshire estate. I’ve worked in keepering myself. E-bikes came to me over a decade ago, and I’ll be on the hill for a while yet.

A keeper, a shotgun, and a working life on the hill.

It began with a Marquis of Bute side-by-side, gifted to my great-great-grandfather for his years keeping the Ayrshire estate. My grandfather is its custodian now, and passes it down the family to whoever will make it earn its keep. I earned my own first paycheck in keepering. Still on the hill today — only the transport has changed.

Why a keeper picks the kit himself

Waterproofs that leak in the second season are junk. Boots that shed a lug on a scree slope are dangerous. A stove that won’t light in wet wind is a night of regret. I’ve seen every version of that story since I was a boy on the hill.

So when I chose what to stock — the bikes, the tents, the billy cans, the sporks — I only picked things I’d trust myself, on the same ground that gave me my first paycheck as a keeper. Ruggedness first. Respect for the ground you’re on second. Nothing else needs saying.

Every bike carries its mark.Tucked inside the user-manual sleeve of every EcoBike you’ll find a numbered Certificate of Authenticity— printed on heavy kraft card, embossed with the Ben Lomond mark, hand-numbered, sealed with our gamekeeper’s gold wax stamp and signed in Perthshire. Keep it with your logbook; it records the build number, frame ID and the date the bike left for you. Small thing. Quietly satisfying.
